Wolviston Management Services are delighted to be supporting a leading heavy industrial manufacturing organisation based in Teesside in the appointment of a Heavy Plant Fitter to join their established engineering function.
This is a key, hands-on role within the site workshop and plant process areas, reporting directly to the Garage Team Leader. You will play a critical part in maintaining the reliability, safety and performance of a wide range of heavy mobile plant assets, supporting production, operational efficiency and site safety objectives.

Working as part of a multi-disciplined engineering team, you will deliver a high-quality maintenance and repair service, responding effectively to breakdowns, defects and improvement opportunities across the plant fleet.
 
The Role
As Heavy Plant Fitter, you will be responsible for the inspection, maintenance, fault-finding and repair of a varied range of heavy plant and mobile equipment, ensuring assets remain safe, compliant and fit for purpose.
Typical equipment includes heavy plant machinery, slab carriers, CAT-based equipment, skip carriers, forklifts, excavators, skid steers and associated mobile assets.
You will use your technical expertise, diagnostic skills and practical experience to identify issues, implement corrective actions and contribute to continuous improvement across the engineering function.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect, diagnose and assess plant and mobile equipment using specialist diagnostic and computer-based tools
  • Carry out routine inspections of engines, gearboxes, hydraulics, electrical systems, tyres and structural components
  • Fault find and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, structural and lubrication system issues
  • Dismantle, repair or replace defective components and assemblies
  • Undertake all aspects of mobile plant maintenance, repairs and asset enhancements
  • Reassemble, test and commission equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation
  • Inspect new equipment prior to use on site
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and update asset status systems
  • Provide clear feedback on defects, failures and corrective actions to colleagues and management
  • Use a wide range of hand and power tools, including lifting, welding and cutting equipment
  • Carry out ongoing safety inspections and promote a strong safety-first culture
  • Respond to plant breakdowns, including out-of-hours call-outs when required
  • Liaise with and manage third-party contractors for specialist repair activities
  • Operate and drive machinery during commissioning, testing and recovery activities

About You
  • Qualified to a minimum of NVQ Level 3, or holding one of the following (or equivalent):
    • Level 2 Certificate in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance
    • Level 2 Diploma in Construction Plant or Machinery Maintenance
    • Level 3 Diploma in Plant Maintenance
    • Or a completed, recognised engineering apprenticeship
  • Previous experience in mechanical maintenance within a heavy engineering, industrial or commercial environment
  • Mobile plant operator licence desirable
  • Strong fault-finding capability across mechanical and hydraulic systems
  • Flexible, proactive and eager to learn and develop
  • Confident communicator, able to engage with colleagues at all levels
  • Able to plan workload around operational demands and work effectively on own initiative
  • Committed to safe working practices at all times
  • Knowledge of steelmaking or similar heavy process environments advantageous but not essential (full training provided)
